Program Details
Velocity training is an essential aspect of baseball for both college recruiters and professional scouts. It is often one of the first things they look for in an athlete, and can play a significant role in their decision-making process. In recent years, velocity programs have become increasingly popular in the baseball community. However, we believe that not enough information and analysis has been conducted on when, how, and if these programs should be prescribed to individual athletes.
Velocity training should be approached in a holistic manner, as throwing hard requires the coordination and strength of the entire body. Many velocity programs focus solely on throwing or holding weighted balls, neglecting other crucial areas of the body. Real velocity training must address the entire body to ensure gains in velocity.
Another important factor that is often overlooked is the athlete’s ability to physically and mechanically handle a velocity program. At Optimal Baseball Performance, we first assess the athlete’s body, functional strength level, and biomechanical efficiency to determine if they can safely handle increased velocity. Without a strong foundation, a velocity program can lead to lack of gains or even injury.
Our Velocity Fitness Program incorporates physical screenings and 3-D motion capture analysis to assess the athlete’s limitations and throwing efficiency. Based on these evaluations, we can make recommendations on the best course of action for the athlete to safely develop arm strength, speed, and velocity. By taking a holistic and individualized approach, we can ensure that each athlete has the best chance of success in their velocity training journey.
